The introduction to literary and cultural studies is one basic part of the Grundlagenmodul "Foundations for the Study of English Language, Literature and Culture" and will extend over two semesters (Grundkurs 1 and Grundkurs 2). The module will be concluded with a written exam (Modulabschlussklausur) after the second semester (Summer Semester 2010) in which the material taught in the introductions to linguistics and the history of the English language will also be examined. Grundkurs 2 provides an overview of the main genres of English-language literature and crucial analytical tools, terminology and methods for working with them. By reference to texts from the British, American, and post-colonial contexts from various periods of literary history, students are introduced to the practice of literary and cultural studies. Building on the knowledge acquired in Grundkurs 1, this course also introduces aspects of the theory of genres and scholarly research tools and methods. |
