Description

Victorian literature and culture have remained among the most pervasive influences in British life today. This lecture traces this seminal period in its literary highlights, but also in its popular manifestations, from its beginnings in the reform years of the 1830s to the dawning of Modernism in the fin de siècle. The lecture is conceived to serve both as an introduction and as a summary survey. As there was no Romanticism lecture in winter semester, a short preview of the literary history of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries will be provided.

Remarks

Start on April 3.
