Description Victorian literature and culture have remained among the most pervasive influences in British history up to the present. This lecture traces that seminal period in its literary highlights, but also in its popular manifestations, from the beginnings in the reform years of the 1830s to the dawning of Modernism in the fin de siècle. The lecture is conceived to serve both as an introduction and as a summary survey.
Literature Robin Gilmour, The Victorian Period. The Intellectual and Cultural Context of English Literature, 1830-1890 (Pearson Education: Harlow a.o., 1993);
The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel (2001);
Joseph Bristow, The Cambridge Companion to Victorian Poetry (2000);
The Cambridge Companion to Victorian Theatre (2004)
