British Nineteenth-Century Melodrama - Single View

This seminar will focus on a much-understudied genre: melodrama. It rose to enormous popularity from the turn of the 18th to the 19th century onwards, and has remained an almost ubiquitous mode to this very day. No preparation is necessary for this seminar, but students wishing to do some preliminary reading could look at the Cambridge Companion to English Melodrama (available as a Cambridge core text in the University web).
