Monitoring Conflict Areas with Satellite Image Time Series
In this study project we will explore the capabilities of satellite image time series (mainly Sentinel-2) for detecting land cover change in conflict regions. The aim is to monitor areas under threat and to detect destruction (burning) of villages. We will develop a method for automatic data acquisition, pre-processing and change detection with a focus on burned area identification.
Depending on the number and personal interests of participants, further directions and focuses are possible:
- Development of an early warning system for specific villages under threat (using additional data on the location of villages)
- Integration of data from different sources (e.g. Sentinel-1, Landsat)
- Visualization and dissemination of results
- Efficient handling of the large amounts of data associated with a continuous monitoring
