In this introductory lecture course "Text, Book & Culture" for M.A. (and equivalent) students, we will deal with foundational questions such as: What is a text? What is a book? What role do books and texts play in (Anglophone) cultural history? As Book Studies comprises the fields of Book History and Publishing Studies, we will survey central texts from both fields, as well as theories and models that are applicable to these areas of research. The lecture also includes a condensed historical overview of the evolution of material texts ”from scrolls to scrolling,” focusing on Anglophone book history and today’s global Anglophone book industry. |
