Today photography is so ubiquitous that we often take it for granted as we scroll through our social media feeds. Yet recent scholarship on history of photography emphasizes that its origins are inextricably tied to the emergence of nationalism, modern imperialism, and colonialism. With this in mind, this interdisciplinary seminar examines the junction between the medium of photography and the main themes in modern Southeast European history, divided into two eras: (1) photography and the empire, and (2) photography and the post-1918 nation-states. We will use the exceedingly digitized, yet under-researched photographic sources to critically examine imperialism, nationalism, and resistance through the photographic lens. We will explore how empires, states, elites, rebels, and subaltern groups and individuals all resorted to photography to fashion visual narratives and forge political messages. Lastly, we will discuss the contentious relationship between photography and the (politics of) memory, as well as the role photography can play in calling to action. |

Die Anmeldephase zum Sommersemester zu den Pro-, Haupt- und Masterseminaren sowie den Übungen findet elektronisch statt. Die Teilnahme wird durch ein auf Wahlgängen beruhendes Verteilverfahren geregelt. Es gibt nur einen Wahlgang am Ende des Wintersemesters.
Der Wahlgang erfolgt in HISLSF vom 16.1.2023 bis zum 31.1.2023 12 Uhr. Es müssen stets drei Wünsche aus einer Epoche angegeben werden. Nach Ende des Anmeldephase werden die Ergebnisse Anfang Februar veröffentlicht. Eine Bestätigung der Annahme des Seminarplatzes ist dann bis zum 28.2.2023 nötig.
